University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust selects FrontRange to help meet tough IT Management standards

FrontRange SAM Suite^TM enables Trust to gain complete control of hardware and software assets and ensure license compliance

November 20, 2008 – FrontRange Solutions, a leader in business software solutions, today announces that University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has purchased 8,000 licenses of FrontRange SAM Suite^TM , to help meet stringent NHS standards on software asset management and IT inventory.  The implementation helps the Trust meet the NHS Infrastructure Maturity Model (NIMM), based on the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) standard for best practice in IT service management and is expected to deliver return on investment within six months.

University Hospitals of Leicester is one of the five largest NHS Trusts in the UK. Comprising three hospitals, the Trust has 2,000 inpatient beds, 12,000 staff, 7,000 PCs and laptops and 350 servers.  Alongside working towards the NIMM, SAM Suite will enable the Trust to gain complete visibility of its software usage.  This will both ensure that all software use across the organization is appropriately licensed, as well as enabling the Trust to better manage its software assets by exploiting its license agreements to the full, leading to significant cost savings.

Additionally, the hardware and software inventory that SAM Suite provides will supply vital information to the IT helpdesk, delivering an accurate picture of all users’ computers and the software running on them.  This will enable helpdesk staff to resolve users’ queries more quickly and efficiently.

The NHS has an enterprise agreement with Microsoft, which requires each Trust to assess the maturity of its IT infrastructure, including software asset management and hardware and software inventory.  The knowledge this provides allows Trusts to build co-ordinated infrastructure improvement plans and justify and prioritise infrastructure investments. To achieve this, the hospital worked with SAMpartners to implement SAM Suite, initially on a 30-day trial. However, it soon discovered previously unknown, valuable information on what lay on the IT estate and made the decision to purchase SAM Suite 

“SAM Suite really opened our eyes to just how little we knew about our IT assets, such as different versions of software installed across the estate,” says David Rose, Technical Security Specialist at University Hospitals of Leicester.  “This gave us complete visibility of all software existing on the network and where it was being used, allowing us to ensure license compliance.  It also provided us with a detailed inventory of the hardware on the estate.

“We are currently undertaking a project to encrypt all laptops across the Trust and had to identify the laptops and roll the encryption software out manually.  If we’d had SAM Suite earlier we could have used it to find the laptops and saved significant man hours, which could have been reinvested elsewhere to increase the productivity of the IM&T department.”
