Conficker worm causes Microsoft to offer bounty

16th February 2009

The Conficker worm, which has caused problems for many users of Microsoft Windows worldwide, has resulted in the software giant putting up a bounty of £250,000 for information about its creator.

According to a recent piece on the Microsoft Security Response Centre by Christopher Budd, his company and a number of other academic and industry partners have been working together to stop the threat, which can exploit the Windows Server service and lead to a data leak, in turn highlighting the need for data loss protection.

He said that in his capacity as a person involved in security responses, "it's exciting for me to see the industry come together to take an innovative, new approach to combating malware".

Mr Budd concluded: "It helps prove again that while threats may be evolving, so too is our response as an industry to these threats."

Last week, the Conficker worm was enough to ground French fighter jets after the navy's military computers became infected by the exploit.
