Companies ought to ensure their workers are careful if accessing personal websites when in the workplace after it was found that a Facebook group has been linking users to malware.
The group, known as "5,000,000 against the new version of Facebook", had 200,000 people joining it daily at its peak, emphasising the popularity of the petition and providing a strong target for spammers and fraudsters.
Commenting on the situation, senior technology consultant at Sophos Graham Cluley said spammers are leaving a trail of spyware and other security threats on webpages like teenagers leaving graffiti in an abandoned house.
He said if anyone was using the website, "maybe now would be a good time to return to some of the groups you may have joined long ago and don't visit anymore and decide if you want to permanently cut your ties before squatting spammers take control".
Earlier this month, Facebook celebrated its fifth birthday and is now home to over 220 million unique users.
