Internet-based crime is likely to escalate as people take advantage of the economic downturn, one technology expert has claimed.
Mark Ward, technology correspondent for the BBC, told the news provider that cybercriminals will be more likely to strike in the current economic climate.
Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at F-Secure, told the expert: "Crime tends to rise when you have more unemployment.
"If you look, in general, where the attacks are coming from you can find social reasons behind them."
Security firms are perhaps most at risk, the expert added, especially as employees with a vast knowledge of technology are made redundant.
Earlier this year, Danny Harrison, identity theft expert for CPP, said the employees in a firm are best-placed to notice any security leaks.
He added that communication was needed between both an employer and their staff to help with data security and ensure the necessary measures are being taken.
