Reputations can be put at risk when a business decides to reduce investment in data loss protection, according to one technology expert.
Maitland Hyslop, Onyx Group chief operating officer and a published author on data security, told the National Computing Centre: "Businesses are having to offer more and at better prices, while continuing to maintain a high standard of quality, in order to remain in the black."
However, underfunding data security could cause negative media as a data leak could be a public relations nightmare for an organisation.
Alongside tarnished reputations after a data leak, companies also have the very real potential to lose out financially.
The expert concluded that the underestimation of the safety net that data loss protection provides could be fatal for a company on the whole.
According to the Intellectual Property Office, 40 per cent of firms do not provide employee training to ensure their data is secure.
