Recent developments in internet technology have made it necessary for buyers to be extra careful when buying any goods online, it has been reported.
A survey by moneysupermarket.com found that 11 per cent of people were using another person's unprotected Wi-Fi network, making the internet connection system particularly problematic for the use of identification.
"The consequences can be severe. It's bad enough your neighbours can use your internet connection freely, but this becomes far more threatening if someone uses your connection for criminal or improper activity," it continued.
Furthermore, it added that the gathering of personal information from the main user by outsiders could result in a data leak, individual or business fraud as well as identity theft.
The price comparison site said that security could be improved through basic techniques such as using non-dictionary words and numbers as passwords alongside firewall and security software.
CIFAS also warned of the problems Wi-Fi could pose, adding that people should avoid looking at online banking when using public networks.
