Leicester city council loses memory stick

Another high profile example of data loss has struck local government after Leicester city council announced it had lost a memory stick from a nursery.

It is understood that the details of 80 children including names, addresses, dates of birth and telephone numbers were included on the missing USB stick.

Council officials are offering parents and carers advice on changing phone numbers or, if the situation demands it, a change of address.

The council's chief executive Shiela Lock said that the administration took the situation very seriously and that a full investigation would be carried out to find out how it happened.

She continued: "We want to express our concern and apologise for this loss. We are very sorry about this.

"We believe it to be a serious and unacceptable breach of our protocols and we will investigate it and take appropriate action."

According to KPMG, around 280 million people have been affected by data leaks in the last three years.
