Small firms have been warned about software piracy in a recent article.
The New Hampshire Business Review has stressed the importance of software compliance and the consequences of failing a software audit to small businesses.
In the article, Marc Berthiaume writes: "For a small business, a software licence violation could be costly enough to do a number on the bottom line, or even cause the business to close."
The publication also notes that small firms are an easy target for software investigations, as they often lack the financial and legal resources to tackle claims.
Citing Business Software Alliance (BSA) figures which reveal 90 per cent of software piracy settlement are from small enterprises, the article recommends companies follow the organisation's guidelines for a basic audit.
The BSA advises firms to control how much software employees can install on their workstations, actively keep track of the software licences and ensure they are prepared to pass a full software audit at all times.
Last week, IT Management recommended the use of metering and strong IT compliance policies to reduce the chance of a full software audit.
