The Bank of Ireland has lost its fifth laptop which contained confidential customer details.
It is thought the computer was lost seven years ago in 2001 but has only just been revealed to management at the financial company.
Customers were not warned of the theft or made aware of the threat to them at the time of the loss.
A spokesperson for the company has said: "Bank of Ireland is investigating an allegation of a stolen laptop computer dating back to 2001.
"The Bank would like to reassure customers that the risk level of any data from seven years ago being used for fraudulent purposes is extremely remote."
Last year the bank's life division lost four laptops which contained information on 31,500 customers.
Since the losses last year, the bank has decided to encrypt 98 per cent of its laptops to reduce the risk of information being used if they are lost.
HSBC has recently revealed that it lost the data on 159,000 accounts at a Hong Kong branch of its bank, but has reassured customers that the information is protected.
