Centennial Article: Encryption should be adopted by more firms

Encryption should be adopted by more firms

Data encryption should be implemented more by companies after recent high profile data loss cases and success stories of encryption, according to a source.

Cases like the government's loss of HM Revenue & Customs details and TK Maxx's loss of 45 million customer credit files has alerted private companies to the rising need to encrypt information, in order to protect it, reports Silicon.com.

A recent case involving a confidential Home Office disc in a laptop being sold on eBay championed the technology of encryption after the information could not be accessed.

In its basic form, encryption scrambles data into meaningless text that cannot be unscrambled unless the holder has the key.

Silicon also points out that while it is possible to crack some forms of encryption, it is not worth the effort needed.

In addition, the Companies Act places the obligation on directors to ensure that data is not lost.

A recent survey showed that many people thought executives should face a prison sentence if their company loses important data.
