Dislike of US fuels open source industry

Open source software take up has been fuelled by other countries' dislike of America, according to an expert.

Jim Whitehurst, the chief executive officer and president of Red Hat, said that people preferred to use open source software as it meant they did not have to pay "intellectual property rights" to American companies, reports Computer World UK.

"I never thought I would say this but actually, being very unpopular in the world, as frankly the US is these days, is a huge benefit to open source," said Mr Whitehurst.

He added, that outside of the US open source is seen as a "fundamental good", reports the computing website.

Responding to an audience member's question at the Open Source Business Conference, Mr Whitehurst said that risks regarding General Public License violations were "an issue".

It was recently reported that the software licensing market is moving away from the closed source form and towards open source technology.
