The prevailing economic gloom is leading many businesses to consider tightening their IT spending, and data management discipline is one area where opportunities for savings are considerable.
A new report to be published at the forthcoming Gartner Business Intelligence Summit considers this issue, and the research company makes a number of suggestions.
Among the proposals are considering open source licensing, renegotiating service contracts and maximising data integration and consolidation.
"When aiming to optimise costs in data management and integration initiatives, it is critical to know what steps to take and where significant savings can be realized while maintaining success in these projects," said vice president and distinguished analyst Ted Friedman.
Others measures proposed to chief information officers include enforcing standards to minimise duplication and maximise reusability and deferring unnecessary or limited-benefit projects.
The full report, "Cost cutting in data management and integration, 2008" will be published at the summit, which takes place from April 1 to 3 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Chicago.
