Information commissioner warns of data loss

The information commissioner has displayed his concern about the rising levels of personal data being lost in the country.

Richard Thomas made the comments about both private and public sector organisations, adding that he knew of 94 serious loss cases, reports The Independent.

Of these, he stated that in only three incidents had the information been recovered.

Mr Thomas described the losses as "inexcusable", with the Financial Services Authority (FSA) having backed up these remarks.

The FSA, the City regulator, has also issued warnings over loss cases in banks, building societies and insurers, reports the newspaper.

Financial institutions have been warned not to "underestimate the risk of data loss and fraud to their businesses, and especially to their customers".

"This includes senior management not recognising the value of customers' data to fraudsters, or that staff could pose a similar threat to security as that posed by computer hackers and burglars," said the FSA in a statement.

The FSA recently warned banks over not using encryption technology on their laptops and portable devices.
