University loses over 2m medical records

The University of Miami has recently announced that six tapes from its medical school were stolen, losing more than two million medical records.

A van which was broken into when transporting the records in March, with the transport firm only notifying the university two hours later, reports ComputerWorld.

Thieves took the transport case carrying the school's computer backup tapes according to Jacqueline Menendez, vice-president of communications at the university.

However, the university only made a public announcement a month after the theft occurred, telling the website: "Even though I am confident that our patients' data is safe, we felt that in the best interest of the physician-patient relationship we should be transparent in this matter."

Included in the information are the names, addresses, social security numbers and health information of all the patients at the university since 1999.

Ms Menendez said that she remained sure the thieves would not know how to access the information or what the tapes contained.

In related news, a move in the UK parliament has recently made it illegal to "recklessly" disclose anyone's data.
