Skype drops license appeal

Skype has dropped its appeal against a conviction of failing to comply with a general public license (GPL).

The voice over internet protocol (VoIP) operator was in breach of the code as it failed to provide users access to the source code, which is required under the open source agreement, reports Builderau.com.

Skype was convicted last July with the case having been brought about by gpl-violations.org.

Harald Welte, a software developer, said in his blog: "In the end, the court hinted twice that, if it was to judge about the case, Skype would not have very high chances."

The basis of Skype's case was that it was not valid in Germany and the GPL breaks the country's anti-trust laws.

Mr Welte said he is only interested in seeing that GPL is fully upheld and judges said the company must abide by the rules in it, despite it being unlikely that anyone would use the code for the VoIP service.

Skype was founded in 2003 and allows users to make and receive calls for free around the world.
