Microsoft combats illegal software

Microsoft is to take legal action against eight software dealers across the world due to alleged illegal sales of unlicensed products.

Following reports on the anti-piracy hotline, the software giant has taken cases against the US, Canada, Egypt and the Netherlands who are accused of selling unlicensed software, reports PressMediaWire.

Michael LoPatriello, chief executive officer of Luna Development, a Microsoft industry partner, said he welcomes the company's move.

"It is important to address this kind of illegal sale to level the playing field for legitimate distribution partners."

Microsoft alleges that the vendors sold the software without providing the required license to customer, after importing the products to North America.

Bonnie MacNaughton, senior attorney at the company, said that the move is part of an "ongoing commitment to protect consumers".

A reduction in the piracy industry in India could save the industry over $3.1 billion (£1.5 billion) and create 44,000 jobs, according to the Business Software Alliance.
