Data loss and data security 'major issue'

An IT security expert at accounting firm Plante & Moran has suggested that the two major issues facing the sector are loss of data and access to data.

Raj Patel told online publication NewsFactor that, while there is comprehensive insurance to cover every possible business contingency, no real policies are in place for major loss of data.

He stated that insurance companies have not developed a product to cover data theft or loss because the market is not yet mature enough.

Mr Patel noted that when natural disasters cause companies to loose power concerns are raised about the availability of systems and data.

"If their systems are down, most companies can't even operate today," he added.

Earlier in the year online publication iscnet.co.uk, reported that Royal Liverpool Children's NHS Trust in Alder Hey, Liverpool had installed data loss technology to support its IT services.

This included the creation of a virtualised server as well as Storage Area Network to provide a centralised data system for the servers.
