Vietnam seizes pirated software

Raids in Vietnam have discovered pirated software worth almost VND4 billion (£119,000), it has been reported.

Government officials from the ministries of public security and culture and police inspectors found the applications at two companies in Binh Duong Province, as the country attempts to increase software compliance, according to thanhniennews.com.

Almost VND3 billion of illegal software was found at the Japanese-backed Yazaki Eds Vietnam, while the reminder was uncovered at Taiwanese-invested Full Power Vietnam.

Both companies failed to have adequate software licence for Autodesk, Adobe Photoshop, Autocad and dictionary application LacViet.

Under the government intellectual property and software licence laws, the firms could incur fines of up to VND25 million.

Earlier this week, vietnamnet.vn reported that Vietnam's effort to tackle software compliance problems was praised by international experts.

Professor David A Gantz from the University of Arizona also advised the country to build on its successes and run an anti-piracy campaign.
