Software asset management 'important for companies'

An IT professional has highlighted the important of software asset management for businesses, it has been reported.

Darrell Jordan, software asset manager at power firm RWE, told ComputerWeekly.com that he scans the 2,000 plus desktops and servers under his charge once a month.

Using Centennial Discovery, Mr Jordan receive reports from the IT audit on what applications are housed on each system, with his main concern being those which break software compliance.

"Software asset management is coming to the forefront now, I think because of large fines being handed out to organisations," he told the news provider.

"Centennial will report back on anybody abusing their administrator rights," Mr Jordan.

He said although viruses are an important issue, downloaded software is his focus as it can often break the conditions of its software license if used in a commercial setting.

Last week, TMC.net revealed West Yorkshire's The Health Informatics Service has chosen Centennial SAM Suite to use when providing IT services to the region's healthcare facilities.
