Vietnam tackles software piracy

The efforts of the Vietnamese government to curb software piracy in the country have been praised by international experts, it has been reported.

During The Cross Cutting Issues of WTO Accession workshop, held in Hanoi last week, US lawyer Thomas J Treutler noted the success of Vietnam's intellectual property legislation in increasing software compliance and reducing other piracy issues, according to vietnamnet.vn.

The laws, which the country introduced two years ago, bring Vietnam into line with international standards and treaties it is party to.

Research from the Business Software Alliance and IDC found the Vietnamese software piracy rate fell from 88 per cent in 2006 to 85 per cent in 2007, although economic losses from the offence doubled to reach $200 million (£100 million).

However, Professor David A Gantz from the University of Arizona told the news provider that Vietnam should continue to build on its early success.

Professor Gantz recommended the introduction of an anti-piracy campaign, with criminal penalties and specialised courts dealing with intellectual property infringements.

Last month, research from IDC showed piracy in Brunei has reached 67 per cent due to the lack of software compliance in the nation, according to brunei-online.com.
