Egypt scoops anti-piracy victory

Anti-piracy measures in Egypt appear to be paying off, as improvements have been reported in the area, it has emerged.

Research from the International Data Corporation (IDC) shows software piracy rates in the country have fallen by three per cent, from 63 to 60 per cent, reports Egypt Daily News.

Although previous estimates from IDC claimed Egypt's software piracy rate would hit 68 per cent in 2007-08, the country is now one point below the global average of 61 per cent.

Hazem Nabil, director of the intellectual property rights department at Microsoft, told the publication: "Considering the number of new users that has entered the field of IT this is considered among the fastest decreasing piracy rate."

The reduction has been attributed to efforts by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to make the country a leading destination for software outsourcing.

Figures from the Egyptian Consumer Protection Agency published earlier in the year claimed software piracy cost around LE 20 billion (£1.87 billion) a year, according to the publication.

Last week, Afterdawn.com citied research from the Business Software Alliance and IDC which found software piracy could have increased by 52 per cent in the United Arab Emirates.
