Kuwait raids software pirate

Microsoft Gulf and the Kuwait Ministry of Commerce and Industry have identified and raided an alleged software pirate, it has been reported.

As part of an ongoing operation between the firm, the Kuwait government and the Business Software Alliance (BSA), Microsoft supplied information which led to the raid on the illegal trader, according to the Cyprus Financial Mirror.

The raid led to the recovery of 16 CDs containing illegal software, among other items.

Rasha Al-Sabah, Kuwait's intellectual property rights manager, said he was grateful for Microsoft's and the BSA's support in the country's anti-piracy operations and claimed the raid proved the government was serious about tackling the problem of software piracy.

Jawad Al Redha, BSA co-chairman in the Middle East, told the publication: "The Kuwait government recognises that a piracy-free society delivers huge benefits, particularly on the economic front, as it will significantly boost foreign investments into the country."

Last week, Al Bawaba reported that Kuwait has signed an agreement with the BSA to step up the fight against software piracy.
