Authorities in the Philippines have declared a series of measures to tackle software piracy in the area, it has been reported.
The country's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IP Philippines) have unveiled a five-point strategy which all government departments and leaders of the public sector must comply with, according to ag-ip-news.com.
A permanent agency to safeguard intellectual property will be created by the Bureau of Customs, while local government units will be encouraged to do more to fight software piracy and the special intellectual property courts will be established.
Meanwhile, a department to train law enforcers, members of the judiciary, scientists and entrepreneurs in the laws surrounding the area will also be set up, with the government planning to strengthen the Philippines' intellectual property rights legislation.
Peter Favila, DTI secretary, told the publication: "A strong intellectual property system promotes innovation and competitiveness, attracts foreign investments and generates employment in the country.
"We have made a significant progress against piracy and counterfeiting in the past three years with IP Philippines taking the lead and we will sustain the momentum."
Last week, brunei-online.com reported that 67 per cent of all software on Brunei's PC was pirated.
