Software piracy hits 67% in Brunei

Software compliance is lacking Brunei, according to new research conducted by IDC.

The forecasting firm discovered that 67 per cent of software on the country's personal computers is pirated, at a cost of $12 million (£6 million) to the industry, reports brunei-online.com.

At a software asset management seminar in Brunei, Roland Chan, the Business Software Alliance Asia marketing director, said firms in the country should end "corporate end user piracy", or buying one copy of original software and distributing it to all the computers in their organisation.

"Software piracy is tantamount to software theft, and therefore forbidden by the law of Brunei," he pointed out.

"The downside of using pirated and unlicensed software is vast, from lower productivity to security concerns to legal risks," Mr Chan added.

He also claimed anti-virus applications were the most pirated form of software, the news provider reports.

In related news, customs officers have cracked a Hong Kong piracy gang which laundered at least HK$6 million (£389,000) in profits.

Around 12,000 pirated discs were recovered when police arrested the group, according to the Hong Kong Standard.
