Open source internet browser Mozilla Firefox 3 has broken the record for the most downloads in one day, it has been claimed.
Although still to be officially confirmed by Guinness World Records, the firm claims around 8.2 million copies of its latest open source software offering were downloaded within 24 hours.
However, the attempt did not get off to a perfect start, as massive demand forced servers off-line for a short period of time, before the problem was resolved.
Mozilla claims downloads of the open source software reached levels of 14,000 per minute at the peak.
John Lilly of the firms commented: "So a good day's work by everyone involved. Like everything that's Mozilla, this involved people far beyond Mountain View and far beyond the borders of any one company or group."
It will take around a week for Guinness World Records officials to check download logs and confirm whether or not the record-breaking attempt was successful.
Firefox 3 contains around 15,000 improvements on the previous version, including a smart location bar and increased malware protection.
A new add-on manager also allows users to customise the open source software with more than 5,000 extra applications.
