Secure business software highlighted

Low-price or free software, such as open source applications, can offer professional packages to small and medium-sized enterprises, an expert has claimed.

Speaking to the Aberdeen Press and Journal, Mark Griffiths, managing director of software solutions firm Codify, pointed to examples offered by Microsoft as being advantageous for businesses.

Mr Griffiths pointed to Microsoft Office Live Small Business as a simple application for designing a website, which can allow be used as an extranet to share information with employees or customers in a password-protected online environment.

Another free program, which also has a premium paid version, is Microsoft Office Accounting 2008, which can be used to manage payroll and make BACS payments, while Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services allows firms to develop an intranet.

"Good software doesn't necessarily have to cost a fortune. Recently, we have seen the availability of incredibly powerful software from Microsoft at little or no cost which is particularly suitable for small to medium businesses," Mr Griffiths told the newspaper.
