The people behind a free software scam have been ordered to pay $2.2 million (£1.12 million) to customers in compensation.
A firm called Think All Publishing offered free software CDs to customers, which were not free and then charged the software users for the product, reports NetworkWorld.com.
When consumers signed up to receive the software they provided their name, address and debit card details, which were then used by the scammers to charge for the full software licence fee.
The Federal Trade Commission has charged the firm because they did not notify customers, who were not aware of having to pay, said the website.
In similar news, businesses have been warned to be wary of free open-source software offered to them, in case it contains an element of pay-for software.
A report from the Burton group said developers may not notify companies of the closed source elements, meaning firms come into compliance issues.
