The advantages of software-as-a-service (SaaS) are being utilised by the launch of services such as Google Apps and Microsoft Office Live, reports Mondaq.
In a report on the importance of repackaging software, comments from Microsoft boss Bill Gates in 2005 are looked at, which are seen as the heralding of techniques such as SaaS.
Mr Gates explained: "The next sea change is upon us ... utilise the Internet to make software far more powerful by incorporating a services model."
It is explained that SaaS is a delivery model which can be used for software applications, where a browser or thin client helps users access services.
Other features of the model include the fact SaaS deploys one copy of the application, which means different areas of the same server can be used to store various customer data while allowing simultaneous application.
Meanwhile, other software areas which are undergoing a change include the recently reported boost in data loss prevention services, in the light of loss scandals, reports IDC.
