Software vendors go soft on licence crackdowns

There are to be fewer crackdowns on licensing and forced software audits by software suppliers, according to the head of the Federation Against Software Theft (Fast).

John Lovelock, chief executive officer of Fast, commented on the need to collaborate with major vendors in order to establish best practice, reports Silicon.com, rather than more aggressive approaches.

He explained: "There is a little bit of fear around, partly because of what Fast has done in the past. Six or seven years ago vendors were quite aggressive with regards to licensing."

Greater understanding of SAM in the industry also meant, said Mr Lovelock, that Fast was often telling IT professionals about issues they are already informed about.

However, there are still problems with software purchasing, as a recent study by Microsoft showed that 63 per cent of IT executives found the procurement process complicated and time consuming.
