Firms are not prepared for software audit

IT professionals have revealed their firms have not prepared to ensure compliance with software licence agreements before deploying the product.

A new survey by King Research has revealed almost two-thirds of IT executives and managers have not put systems in place to ensure software compliance.

In addition, the research found the IT professionals think their firm is not prepared for a software licence compliance audit, saying they use manual licence tracking process rather than SAM software.

Over half of the 350 respondents reported tracking licences manually, rather than incorporating a SAM product to do the job for them and 60 per cent admitted to having unlicensed software deployed.

Diane Hagglund, of King Research, said: "In reality, most IT organisations want to be in compliance, but they are struggling with the effort to discover software assets, track license assignments, reconcile purchased licenses to installed software, and take the necessary steps to ensure compliance."

Bruce Stewart, writing for ComputerWorld, recently said companies need to protect themselves against information and software licences, as many do not realise the need for compliance.
