Centennial Article: 'US worse than China' for software piracy

'US worse than China' for software piracy

An expert has revealed that software piracy levels are still higher in the US than in China, despite public perception being otherwise.

Sir Hugh Laddie, a lawyer and former high court judge, said a "complete misconception" had occurred about the scale of the problems in China compared to other nations, reports the Times.

He said: "Of course there is counterfeiting in China, but the same goes on in the US and Europe. Pro rata, the biggest source of pirated computer software in the world is the US."

Sir Laddie, who was speaking ahead of the launch of the Institute of Brand and Innovation Law from University College London, told the newspaper they would seek to create links with internet providers in China and India.

A report from the Business Software Alliance has calculated the global level of piracy had dropped in 67 countries last year and only increased in eight.
