Open source 'enters mainstream and businesses'

Open source is entering the mainstream, with more firms choosing to adopt the technology, according to a source.

The website PCWelt.de said firms may be adopting the software as it is free, but that they are being adopted "quietly".

It mentions a study by CIO.com, which revealed over half of respondents are using open source software (OSS) in their firm, with ten per cent planning to do so this year.

The website reports the Linux operating system is the main product used, with 78 per cent utilising it.

Respondents also said they believe the technology is reliable enough for mission critical applications, with 62 per cent of IT executives and managers thinking it is ready for the 'prime time'.

Web servers and software development tools are also being adopted by firms.

Open source enterprise applications are increasingly being used, like customer relationship management tools and ERP applications.

It was recently predicted by John Powel, the chief executive officer of open source content management firm Alfresco, that the open source industry is worth £30 billion.
