Firms warned against OSS

Companies are being warned that using open source software (OSS) could create problems for their firm, according to a law firm.

Ward Hadaway, based in the north-east of England, said using OSS could cause trouble for companies as the background behind it is not known, reports the Northern Echo.

The newspaper said the software may have cost a business thousands of pounds to develop, but be given away for free.

Judy Baker, IT partner at the law firm, said that instances have occurred when closed source software contains a small part of open source material and is then offered for free.

She added that while OSS was issued under a licence, there are 40 different versions, meaning it is hard to tell under which guidelines companies are operating.

A report from the US Department of Homeland Security has said that security surrounding the software has improved, meaning more firms may opt for it.
