IT bosses not happy with licence costs

IT managers have reported they are not satisfied with the lack of ability to save money on Microsoft's new software licences, according to a source.

InfoWorld reports that IT managers would love the flexibility of being able to reduce prices on the licenses, but even the use of virtualisation cannot afford this, according to Christopher Voce, an analyst at Forrester.

"If you are getting any benefit from Microsoft's software, you need to have a license, whether that benefit is for physical machines or virtual machines," he said.

He stated that firms cannot engineer around licensing agreements or use technology to cut corners on it.

Firms which did so may find their software compliance is compromised.

A report from the Burton Group recently found that some companies "accidentally" failed to reveal when a server is running on a virtual machine and so causing software compliance issues.

Bruce Stewart, writing for ComputerWorld, said recently that companies should put measures in place to ensure security and compliance needs are met.
