An American man has won a court case regarding software licenses, after it was found he was selling second-hand software on the internet.
Timothy Vernor was found to be reselling copies of Autodesk's AutoCAD on eBay from 2005-07, reports Outlaw.com.
A US court has ruled he is not doing anything illegal, despite the manufacturer claiming the software is licensed rather than sold.
The website reports that software companies have often said the products are sold to the user license, with many forbidding resale of the item.
However, the court ruled the transfer of the software to the user was a sale and not a licence agreement, meaning Mr Vernor is free to resell the product.
Richard Jones, the judge in the case, told the website: "If there were no License, there is no dispute that Mr. Vernor's resale of the AutoCAD packages would be legal."
The Software & Information Industry Association launched a campaign earlier this month against eight sellers on eBay believed to be selling counterfeit software.
