Growing IT companies need to put practices in place to protect information and software licences, according to one source.
Bruce Stewart, writing for Computer World, said that most IT departments operate on a command and control mode, with regard to the need for security and compliance.
However, tight budgets mean central IT departments start to see choke points and things do not get done, compromising security.
Mr Stewart said firms should bear in mind that "every time a door is closed, a way to get around it opens up".
He added that a lot of IT is built in user areas, but the central group offers advantages of giving the support of corporate compliance and audit or having their IT department perform this function.
It was revealed recently that more firms are looking to comply with regulations on compliance to avoid costly penalties, according to IBM.
Peter Rajnal, software solutions manager for IBM's software group in Southeast Asia, told the Inquirer that companies are considering compliance more in recent times.
