Open source raised security may cause increased uptake

The uptake of open source may increase as news comes that security around the software has improved.

An annual report from the US Department of Homeland Security has found a 16 per cent drop in the past two years of security vulnerabilities.

The report assessed 55 million lines of code and found on average 0.25 errors per 1,000 lines, a fall on the 0.3 errors found in 2006.

"Many developers have an opinion about the differing quality and security of open source versus commercial software, and a number of theories have been hypothesised to justify the superiority of one class of code over another," the report said.

Despite that the report determined it was impossible to compare the two classes of code, mainly as getting comparable data was difficult.

It was recently estimated that the open source software industry is worth £30 billion and is becoming the world's largest software business, according to John Powel, the chief executive officer of open source content management firm Alfresco.
