Hackers access CVs on website

Hackers managed to access CVs submitted onto an Irish job website, gaining personal details about applicants.

The CVs were downloaded in bulk last Thursday due to a security breach, meaning clients of Jobs.ie are now at risk from identity fraud and phishing.

Following the theft of CVs, some applicants were then approached by criminals posing as potential employers trying to glean further information from them.

The thieves used a login and password they had gained by posing as an employer, to access the information.

Research by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) recently showed that over three-quarters of people are more worried about personal data security than ever.

The poll of 1,000 people found that 53 per cent no longer had trust in organisations like banks, government departments and local authorities.

In addition, 88 per cent of people now refuse to give out personal details wherever possible.

David Smith, deputy commissioner at the ICO, said that organisations which do not recognise the importance of data protection "not only risk losing business" but they could also face prosecution from the commissioner.
