75,000 patients' details released

A dental health maintenance organisation (HMO) has released the details of 75,000 patients on the internet, in the US.

Included in the information were social security numbers, names, phone numbers and other personal details, which remained online for at least two weeks last month.

The company, which is one of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield's HMOs, said that a technical error had led to the release of information.

Michael Sullivan, the Dental Network's (TDN) spokesman, said: "We moved in a timely fashion to secure the data and notify the members."

TDN also informed its members that no medical details were put at risk.

A statement from the company said: "The data is now secure and the issues that resulted in the data breach have been corrected."

In addition, all affected members have been contacted and TDN is trying to ensure that the possibility of identity theft is reduced.

Recently, it was reported that more companies should adopt encryption practices to stop high-profile data loss cases.
