Centennial Article: Law suit may affect software license rules

Law suit may affect software license rules

A current law suit may affect the way customers can use software, regarding licensing laws.

Blizzard Entertainment, which makes multi-player online games, in particular World of Warcraft, has sued another games maker which offer to play the game for you user to get them up to a high skill level, reports Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Blizzard claims Michael Donnelly, the developer of the programme, has breached the license agreement by using the software.

The games manufacturer claims that people who use the software are committing copyright infringement as the agreement forbids using the product.

If Blizzard is successful it will mean software vendors can stop the sale of any product which interferes with theirs, said the website.

However, the website argues that the theory is wrong as it confuses the copyright holder's intellectual property rights and the buyer's rights.

One website recently said that open source software comes with the increased chance of breaching intellectual property rights.
