HSBC has admitted to losing the data on 159,000 accounts from a Hong Kong branch of its bank, but says the information is securely protected.
The bank said the server containing the information was protected by many security systems, reports Economic Times.
Included in the details are the account numbers, names and transaction details of the customers, but the PIN numbers and user IDs were not on the file.
Customers only discovered about the loss after the media reported it, with them being told to wait one or two days for an explanation.
However, James To, the chairman of the legislative council's security panel, told the website that the lost data would be enough for fraudsters to access and obtain the information.
The Hong King Monetary Authority said that HSBC should contact all affected customers and give advice on what measures should be taken.
It is the latest loss in Hong Kong, after nine largely unencrypted USB sticks were stolen or misplaced from public hospitals.
