Open source developers be wary of IP risks

With the rise in open source software comes increased intellectual property (IP) risks, as developers borrow code from other projects.

InfoWorld is warning that developers must make sure the final product complies with the licenses of the donor projects, otherwise managers could unwittingly commit copyright breaches.

IT bosses will not know which part of their project comes from open source projects and which come from copyrighted sources.

Managers generally have to rely on their developers to check these facts and the compliance, however some software is available to do this job.

It is important for developers to know the license agreements and the obligations of the open source agreement.

Recent research from North Bridge Venture Partners said that open source is a more attractive software option, with over half of the study's respondents saying they think it is viable business model.

In addition, 72 per cent thought the subscription software format would overtake the perpetual licensing model.
