Government's data breaches cause distrust

The government's recent data breaches have caused public distrust, according to an industry body.

According to the British Computer Society, the high-profile loss cases have caused 66 per cent of people surveyed to report that their trust in the government has decreased following the events, reports ZDNet.

The 1,025 respondents said that incidents like the HM Revenues & Customs' loss of 25 million personal records caused the distrust.

David Evans, the society's government relations manager, told the website: "People inside the public sector know [it] is not terribly surprising that [breaches such as HMRC's] happened, but for people outside the public sector this was a huge shock."

He stated that the society had warned people that they losses would occur.

Mr Evans added: "We want to find a way forward for information sharing without damaging public trust."

Recently the information commissioner warned both public and private sector companies that he was concerned over the high level of data loss in the country.
