One expert has warned that it is not easy for some companies to be vigilant on software usage and compliance.

WWPI.com has warned that many IT departments are stretched thin with few resources, meaning ensuring software compliance can fall off the radar.

However, the website says attention to this area can "pay dividends" and can cut costs and improve efficiency.

Businesses can run into both financial and legal issues from having unlicensed or improperly used software.

While compliance monitoring software can be expensive, it can save money in the long term, if a legal case is avoided.

Software piracy is another issue facing businesses, with 35 per cent of the products installed on PCs across the world being illegal, according to the Buisness Software Alliance.

Gwen Thomas, president of the Data Governance Institute (DGI), recently warned that invisible threats are the largest facing a company.
