Microsoft has hit back at claims that defects in its software led to the recent hacking of 500,000 websites.
Last week half a million websites were infiltrated including those run by the UK government and United Nations. The successful attacks were blamed by security researchers on flaws in Microsoft's software.
Bill Sisk, a communications manager at Microsoft's Security Response Center, said: "Our investigation has shown that there are no new or unknown vulnerabilities being exploited. This wave is not a result of a vulnerability in Internet Information Services or Microsoft SQL Server."
Computers became infected after visiting a defective site which led to the downloading of a file originating from a malicious server. The file then launched attempted attacks at Microsoft applications.
Mr Sisk advised users to employ Firefox rather than Internet Explorer because it prevents automatic running of Javascript vulnerabilities.
Symantec suggested the disabling of Javascript after the web attack was revealed, in order to avoid further infiltrations from malware.
