The names, addresses and bank details of 27,000 customers of Boots' Dental Plan have gone missing, after a back-up tape was stolen.
Included in the information on the tape were the details of 8,000 Boots staff and their payroll accounts, following the theft from the van of a security contractor.
The high-street chemist has reassured customers that "specialist equipment" is needed to read the tapes and so they should not be concerned.
"We would like to reassure Boots Dental Plan customers that the type of tape that was stolen, and the way the information was stored, makes it highly unlikely that any personal data could be accessed or misused," said a statement from the company.
Banks holding the accounts of the affected customers have been notified, with them able to monitor suspicious transactions.
Medisure, who administers the plan for the company, said that conventional laptops and PC equipment could not be used to access the information.
The FSA has recently warned its industry that not enough is being done to protect their customers from identity theives.
