Microsoft reveals web-based software

Microsoft has revealed a new web-based software system, which is a data storage and software system rolled into one.

The product, called Live Mesh, will move software to an online operation and will aim to merge it with the wide array of services available on electronic gadgets.

Bill Gates, the company's co-founder, chairman and chief architect, said: "We're making the PC the place where it all comes together."

Microsoft aims to synchronise the user's data, applications and other devices into the so-called web mesh.

Forbes says that the company has made the move amid a struggle to move from the PC desktop to the web.

Analysts say the move could be much needed, predicting that Microsoft will report a 14 per cent drop in its fiscal third quarter profits, compared to last year.

Microsoft has recently launched a downloadable version of its Office suite, to give customers more options about how to pay.
