Bill Gates has announced that he "disagrees" with the GNU General Public License, which is a widely used free software license.
Microsoft's top boss said that open source creates a license "so that nobody can ever improve the software", reports Ars Technica.
He adds that this squandered the lost opportunities for jobs and businesses.
"There's free software and then there's open source," he stated, with open source software, on the other hand, "there is this thing called the GPL, which we disagree with".
However, people in the open source community have questioned this, saying open source allows further improvement on the software, reports the Open Road.
The website also points out that the GPL is similar to a proprietary license, with it protecting openness, not closed source.
Microsoft recently announced that it now welcomes open source technology, despite having previously been against the idea.
The Redmond Channel Partner Online reported that the software giant has made moves to increase the openness of its products.
