Sun to make Java completely open source

Sun Microsystems is looking to remove the final restrictions on Java to make it completely open-source.

If this were possible, Java could then be packaged-up with Linux more ably and distributed alongside the product, reports Yahoo.

Rich Sands, group manager for developer marketing at Sun, said: "We're hoping to see some movement [with the] Linux distributions in the very near future, hopefully by JavaOne."

While OpenJDK, which is based on Java Platform, began to be open sourced in November 2006 there were certain elements, which accounted for four per cent of the product, which could not be offered under the GNU General Public License.

Included in these were some graphics libraries, the sound engine, encryption libraries and some SNMP management code.

Mr Sands said: "Over the past year, we have pretty much removed most of those encumbrances," but added that they were working with the open source community to finish off the project.

In related news, it was recently revealed that Linux use is set to grow to £25 billion over the next few years.
