Centennial Article: Maintaining compliance in a virtualised world

Maintaining compliance in a virtualised world

IT professionals are advised to implement a range of measures in order to ensure that they maintain compliance ‘in a virtualised world’.

An article on ITBusinessNet explains that those creating virtual environments should understand software agreements fully before starting and track and manage licences that are not specifically addressed in agreements on virtual servers.

The report recommends that IT professionals apply the same criteria to creating virtualised worlds as they do to physical servers and implement software asset management (SAM) technology to "monitor compliance both within the virtual environment and infrastructure-wide".

"The onus is on IT professionals to maintain license compliance in a virtualised world, as the majority of software publishers haven't yet offered solutions for licensing their software in virtual environments," the article states.

Some software vendors, such as Microsoft, have started to provide solutions, but IT departments are urged to "tread carefully" to ensure that they do not violate existing licensing agreements.

A recent report by analyst Gartner forecast that virtualisation technology will cause the biggest shift in the software licensing industry until 2012. Industry leaders have already formed an alliance, Grid Computing Now!, to try and find a solution to the issue of software licenses in a virtualised world.
